Microneedling for Acne Scars What the Evidence Shows
Acne scars affect a significant portion of the population and are one of the most researched indications for microneedling. The mechanical injury created by the needles stimulates collagen production in the dermis, gradually filling in atrophic scars over multiple sessions.
Types of Acne Scars That Respond
Rolling scars respond best to microneedling because they have preserved dermal structure that can be remodeled. Boxcar scars show moderate improvement with deeper needle penetration. Ice pick scars are the most difficult to treat with microneedling alone and may require combination therapy.
Treatment Protocol
Standard protocol requires 3 to 6 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Treatment depth ranges from 1.0 to 2.5 millimeters depending on scar type. Deeper scars require deeper needle penetration and longer recovery between sessions.
Expected Results
Clinical studies report 30 to 60 percent improvement in scar appearance after a full course of treatment. Results continue to improve for 3 to 6 months after the final session as collagen remodeling continues.
