Microneedling for Hair Regrowth Evidence and Protocols
Microneedling for hair regrowth works by stimulating the release of growth factors from platelets and activating dermal papilla cells in the hair follicle. The micro-injuries also increase blood flow to the scalp and enhance the penetration of topical treatments.
Androgenetic Alopecia
The strongest evidence exists for androgenetic alopecia. A 2022 meta-analysis of 12 clinical trials found that microneedling combined with topical minoxidil produced significantly greater hair count increase than minoxidil alone after 12 weeks of treatment.
Treatment Protocol for Scalp
Scalp microneedling uses depths of 0.5 to 1.5 millimeters depending on the scalp area and condition being treated. Sessions are spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart. A course of 4 to 6 sessions is typically recommended before evaluating response.
Expected Timeline
Initial results may be visible after 8 to 12 weeks, with optimal results at 6 to 12 months. Consistent treatment and adherence to the complete protocol are key factors in achieving visible regrowth.
